The History of Jubilee Hall Nashville is Rich
The Jubilee Hall stands today as one of Fisk University’s “Living Learning Centers,” a place where the freshman women of Fisk reside, share knowledge, and socialize on campus. Students agree that it is one of the most unique Fisk University freshman dorms! With its Gothic Revival architectural features, the Jubilee Hall Nashville is the university’s oldest and most famous structure. It is even one of the most famous residence halls in the world!
The Jubilee Hall Nashville was constructed in 1871 with proceeds from the world-renowned Fisk University Jubilee Singers’ tour. The hall represents the first permanent structure in the South for the education and advancement of African Americans. The Jubilee Hall Nashville is a National Historic Landmark.
The Appleton Room is Stunning
The Jubilee Hall Nashville’s Appleton Room is one of the most interesting aspects of the landmark. Now a ballroom space, the Appleton Room is tastefully refurbished and adorned with a 14th-century ceiling from the Castle Polheim in Austria. Situated on the first floor of the building, the Appleton Room boasts an enormous portrait of the original Jubilee Singers. In the 1880s, Edward Havell, Queen Victoria’s right-hand portrait painter, created the portrait. Fun fact: This was a gift to Fisk University from the Queen of England herself as recognition for the Jubilee Singers’ talent and ties to Nashville, TN. That’s how we got our beloved “Music City” nickname!
