Historic Downtown Nashville: The District

If you’re looking for historic downtown Nashville, then head to The District. This is the conglomeration of historic buildings that stand along Broadway, 2nd Avenue, Riverfront, and Printer’s Alley. Collectively, this area has been dubbed The District. It is maintained by a non-profit organization seeking to retain historic downtown Nashville and its historic character. Within the district, you will find a variety of shops, restaurants, art galleries, and local nightlife! Honey Girl is a quaint boutique gift shop and artisan collection, featuring truly one-of-a-kind finds. For even more history than what you see from the sidewalks, visit a variety of museums in the area. The Johnny Cash Museum is one of our favorites! Then, for dinner, you can’t go wrong with Merchants. This restaurant offers bistro fare downstairs and fine dining with stunning views on the second floor. Then, after dinner, enjoy the nightlife at the Bourbon Street Blues and Boogie Bar!

Historic Downtown Nashville: 2nd Avenue

Near Riverfront Park, you will discover historic 2nd Avenue, a key part of The District. Previously known as Market Street until 1903, 2nd Avenue contains the best concentration of Victorian facades. Stroll the streets and take in unique architectural details as you pass historic buildings. In fact, most of the two-to-five-story structures you pass date back to 1870-1890. Many served as warehouses and shopfronts for goods shipped along the Cumberland River. Restoration and renovation of these historic buildings is a big aspect of Nashville historic preservation. A noteworthy example is the Silver Dollar Saloon, which is now part of the Hard Rock Cafe on the corner of 2nd Avenue and Broadway. It once served as an entertainment venue for riverboat workers docked at the wharf!
