The History of the Parthenon in Nashville, TN

The Parthenon is in the middle of Nashville Centennial Park, the city’s premier urban park. This Grecian structure was built in the late 19th century for the 1897 Centennial Exposition. The Exposition featured many buildings that emulated ancient works. Historians preserved the Parthenon because it was the only perfect replica.

Though it is not made of the original marble, the structure’s plaster coating perfectly imitates the materials used in Greece. Curators renovate the Parthenon frequently for normal wear-and-tear. In addition, they perfect details within the building to better imitate its Greek predecessor. In the 1990s, curators added a replica of the Athena Parthenos statue to the site.

Visit the Parthenon

Today, the Parthenon serves as Nashville’s premier art museum. 19th- and 20th-century artists even donated a permanent collection in 1927! The building now features restroom facilities, a gift shop, and a gilded statue of the goddess Athena that perfectly mimics the one found in Greece. Explore the galleries and exhibits using the attraction’s self-guided tour. Groups of 10 or more and must schedule in advance for guided tours.

The Parthenon is open from Tuesday to Saturday, 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and on Sunday, 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. Tickets are just $6 for adults and $4 for children and seniors.
